To mark the occasion of Labour Day, the Staff Union of the International Labour Organization expresses its solidarity with all workers fighting for social justice and their fundamental rights at work. The Union commends the creation of the International Trade Union Confederation last year, which represents an important milestone in the struggle for decent work throughout the world.

At a time when UN reform is brought more and more into question, the ILO Staff Union hopes that the fundamental values of the Organization will be preserved and strengthened, and that the social dimensions of its contribution to the preservation of global peace will be fully taken into account. There cannot be peace without social justice. As the ILO engages in the reform process, it must bring its vision and its commitment to the promotion of social dialogue, tripartism, freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, and full respect of international labour standards. These represent essential elements of all sustainable development policies based on respect for human rights.

Joining with our brothers and sisters in staff unions and staff associations of the UN system, we call for all reforms to be carried out with respect for the rights of international civil servants and within the framework of negotiations with their representatives.

A l’occasion de la Fête internationale du travail, le Syndicat du personnel de l’Organisation internationale du Travail exprime sa solidarité avec les travailleurs et travailleuses en lutte pour la justice sociale et pour le respect de leurs droits fondamentaux au travail. Elle salue la création l’an dernier d’une grande Confédération syndicale internationale, comme un jalon important dans le combat pour le travail décent partout dans le monde.

Au moment où il est de plus en plus question de réforme de l’ONU, le Syndicat du personnel de l’OIT souhaite que les valeurs fondamentales de l’Organisation soient préservées et renforcées et que soient pleinement prises en compte les dimensions sociales de la contribution de l’ONU à la préservation de la paix dans le monde. Il ne peut y avoir de paix sans justice sociale. En s’engageant dans la réforme le BIT devra y apporter sa vision et son engagement envers la promotion du dialogue social, du tripartisme, de la liberté syndicale et du droit à la négociation collective, et du respect des normes internationales du travail, éléments essentiels de toute politique de développement durable basée sur le respect des droits de l’homme.

Avec nos collègues des syndicats des organisations du système des Nations Unies, nous demandons que toute réforme se fasse dans le respect des droits des fonctionnaires internationaux et dans le cadre de négociations avec leurs représentants.

Nous participerons au cortège du 1er mai 2007, comme toujours, avec un groupe qui portera nos couleurs.
